Red Pineau des Charentes Cognac Based Aperitif
Description
Pineau des Charentes red is a blend of house Léonard cognac and red grape juice. Ideal as an aperitif, on foie gras or on desserts. A legend reports that the Pineau des Charentes was invented by chance by a Charentais winemaker in 1589. He mistakenly assembled a quantity of grape must in a barrel which already contained a base of cognac. He waited for the fermentation which never started but had the pleasant surprise of tasting a fruity and slightly alcoholic product, which became Pineau des Charentes. The Léonard family's wine-growing operation dates from 1941. Nowadays the estate has 42 hectares of vines and has its winery, its distillery and its storage winery at the estate. The minimum aging period is 14 months, including 8 months in oak barrels. The pink or red pineau is made from red grape must. The assembly process is the same as for the white pineau and the age specifications are the same. Pineau Rouge (less than 5 years old), Pineau Rouge Vieux (5 to 10 years old), Pineau Rouge extra old (more than 10 years old).
