CHIVAS REGAL 18 ANS Blended Scotch Whisky 70 cl
Description
This CHIVAS REGAL 18 YEARS Blended Scotch Whisky 70 cl is a Blend whisky produced in Scotland, marketed by the Chivas brand and aged 18 years.
The Chivas brothers, James & John, are the originators of what we know as blended whiskies. They were the first to come up with the idea of blending malt whiskies with whiskies made from other cereals. The result is a whisky that is just as tasty, but full of sweetness. Chivas Regal whiskies are synonymous with whiskies of excellence.
CHIVAS REGAL 18 YEARS OLD Blended Scotch Whisky 70 cl is a Blended, which are the origin of whisky. To blend means to mix together. This is what is done with this type of whisky, which is a blend of whiskies from different origins. The blend is made up of whiskies from a variety of cereals, malts, distilleries and ages. In the beginning, the major brands of blended whiskies were English wine and spirits distributors, blending multiple Scotch whiskies according to a particular recipe. Blends can be found all over the world, in regions as diverse as Japan and Ireland. Although they are blends, some blends are nonetheless sought-after across the globe for their high quality.
This whisky is a Scotch whisky. Scotland is home to the largest number of malt distilleries in operation, with over 97 distilleries listed. Traditionally, distilleries generally use double distillation, which has been regulated since the 17th century! This just goes to show the extent to which the famous "Scotch whiskey", renowned for its excellent taste, is part of Scotland's heritage. There are 5 main regions: the Lowlands in the south and the Highlands in the north are the two largest, Speyside in the north-east, Campbeltown and the islands (Orkney, Skye, Mull, Jura and Arran) and finally the island of Islay, where there is undoubtedly the highest concentration of malt distilleries per square kilometre in the country.
Whisky is only made when it has spent at least 3 years in an oak cask. Wood is therefore a key element in the personality of each whisky, including this one, and in its colour. A whisky is therefore necessarily woody and tannic. The time spent in the cask and the origin of the oak leave their mark on the whisky, but also the way the cask has been treated and, of course, the substance it contains when it is a second fill for a finish (rum, cognac, armagnac, Burgundy wine, Barollo wine, etc). The combinations are almost infinite, and this is what delights whisky lovers, who sometimes rediscover a distillery thanks to new finishes.
This CHIVAS REGAL 18 YEARS Blended Scotch Whisky 70 cl has spicy notes. The spicy notes in a whisky come mainly from the wood in the cask in which it was matured. This wood has been heated during the construction of the cask, and the wood has been toasted beforehand if the cask has ever housed Bourbon. Mastering the toasting of the wood is therefore essential, and influences the transmission of these spicy notes to the whisky. The most common spices are vanilla, pepper and cinnamon. Rye in particular, which is a cereal, gives the whisky a superb spicy, peppery touch. Smell it once in Bulliet Etiquette Verte bourbon, which is 95% rye, and you'll understand.
This CHIVAS REGAL 18 YEARS Blended Scotch Whisky 70 cl has floral notes evoking hints of fresh flowers such as heather, violet, orange blossom, rose and lavender. These notes are very subtle, and the quality and number of distillations directly influence the perception of these fine aromas. Perfume notes such as incense are also perceptible, carried by the heavier, more oily elements of this whisky.
This CHIVAS REGAL 18 YEARS Blended Scotch Whisky 70 cl is fruity, which evokes a notion of lightness in its aromas and flavour on the palate. The yeasts used play an essential role in the final result, and generally speaking, as soon as a whisky is not peaty, smoky or iodised, fruit aromas can be felt. The main fruit families are white-fleshed fruits such as peaches, pears and apples, red fruits and citrus fruits, as well as dried fruits such as walnuts and fresh hazelnuts.
