The fabulous Ardbeg distillery

The legendary distillery on the Isle of Islay has been dormant for a long time, but was relaunched in 1997. Located along the south-east coast of Islay, the Ardbeg distillery (a Gaelic word meaning "small promontory") was officially created in 1815, when whisky was equalised in Scotland. Once known for decades as a haven for smugglers, the famous underground distillers who originally made the finest malts. Ardbeg's clandestine still was built in 1794.

Tasting Ardbeg Uigeadail Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

A beautiful deep golden colour. On the nose, the first surprising sensation is one reminiscent of Christmas cake and violets, which blend perfectly with cedar and pine needles. Hints of treacle toffee and chocolate sultanas are revealed along with hints of smoke. On the palate, the sweetness is behind an explosion of winter spices, and the flavours of glazed honey, smoke and chewy treacle provide a lovely balance. The smoky notes give the impression of a good cigar on the palate.
