Ardbeg Distillery

The legendary Islay distillery has been dormant for a long time, but was relaunched in 1997. Located along the south-east coast of Islay, the Ardbeg distillery (Gaelic for "little headland") was officially founded in 1815, when whisky was equalised in Scotland. Once known for decades as a haven for smugglers, the famous underground distillers who originally made the finest malts. Ardbeg's clandestine still was built in 1794.

First of all, a lovely light golden colour. Then a round, partly smoky nose, accompanied by creamy caramel, aniseed, treacle and dates. On the palate, it has a smooth, creamy, syrupy sweetness, with aromas of chocolate, caramel, aniseed, orange and smoked tea leaves - a delight. Not forgetting the surprisingly sweet spices, the aromas of grilled artichoke mingling perfectly with the woody smokiness. The highlight of the show is the lingering, gentle yet intense finish, with flavours of aniseed and smoke combining subtlety and distance.
