Whiskey Cardhu
Do you know Speyside whiskey?
Cardhu is a Speyside ideally located upstream of the River Spey which allows it to benefit from particularly pure water. Cardhu sells 75% of its single malt production in France and Spain where it enjoys a formidable reputation. Its presence in the selection of classic malts has helped this reputation, but the intrinsic quality of these malts has a lot to do with it. Cardhu produces a tasty malt, silky fairly easy at first, evoking honey, malt, wood, but also English caramels (Toffee) as well as fruity notes such as apple.
A third of Cardhu's production is sold as single malt, the rest is an essential component of Johnnie Walker's fine blends. It is for this reason that it is practically impossible to find Cardhu at independent bottlers.
Cardhu Anecdotes (Speyside Whiskey)
There are some tasty anecdotes to mention about Cardhu. Before 1981 this distillery was called Cardow after the name of the farm which illegally distilled from 1811 to 1824 when an official license was purchased. During his clandestine period, the officials in charge of controls were always well received by Helen Cumming the wife of John who offered them lunch, she hastened to plant a red flag around the farm to warn the neighborhood of the arrival controllers. Helen had found a quick and easy process that switched her fermentation tanks into bread dough production tanks. The first stills that William Grant bought used for the start of Glenfiddich were the first stills from Cardhu.
