The Dominican Republic and Haiti are two parts of one and the same island, the very one where Christopher Columbus landed in 1492 and which he named Hispaniola. It was from this island that the tremendous expansion of sugarcane cultivation in the Caribbean and in South and Central America began. Indeed these rums are light, distilled in a column still and aged in American oak barrels, these methods were often imported from Cuba following the Castro revolution which scared many rum production companies. The brands Rhum Barcelo, Ron Opthimus, Rum Matusalem, Ron Esclavo, Ron Relicario are major representatives of rums from the Dominican Republic.

The Barcelo Imperial Rum obtained the best rating (97/100) ever recorded by a rum with the Chicago Beverage Institute.
