Agricultural rum (made from fresh sugar cane juice) and traditional rum (made from molasses) are produced in Guadeloupe. Guadeloupe still has a few working distilleries. There were up to 50 at the beginning of the 20th century. Guadeloupe unlike Martinique does not have an AOC. The cultivation of sugar cane occupies 15,000 hectares of agricultural land and is often the only production for more than 5,000 farms. Rum in Guadeloupe is an integral part of Guadeloupe culture, cooking, pastry making, literature evoke culture cane and rum. The still active distilleries are: Bologna, Carrere which produces Montebello, Damoiseau, Espérance which makes Longueteau and Karukera, Séverin, Bellevue, Bielle and Poisson with Père Labat.
