Brouilly & Côtes de Brouilly
In 1938 distinction between Brouilly and Côte de Brouilly
At the beginning of the century, a large appellations grouped together the current Brouilly and the Côte de Brouilly (which sometimes bore the mention of Brouilly 1er Cru). It was not until 1938 that the wines of Brouilly and Côte de Brouilly were distinguished from each other. The great Brouilly - Côtes de Brouilly appellation is the most southerly among the 10 Beaujolais crus, it is also the most extensive. The AOC Côte de Brouilly which is inserted in Brouilly corresponds to the slopes of Mont Brouilly. Depending on the terroir there is great complexity and great variation in the expression of Gamay. The density of plantation is a way of countering the prolix naturalness of the Gamay, the granite mainly present gives the wines a mineral expression of fresh fruit. The majority terroirs in Pierres Bleues give deep fruity saline wines with a slightly smoky finish. Some production areas in Brouilly stand out. You have to taste a Pisse Vieille en Brouilly by Jean Paul Brun to assess the tremendous potential of these wines.
